As a bonus there was a premier inserted between the Scarlatti [Stabat Mater] and Bach [Jesu meine Freude]. Christopher Hossfeld’s Ave regina caelorum was composed in the knowledge of its position in the program. Accordingly, it fit nicely, serving as a kind of harmonic bridge. It would undoubtedly stand well on its own, too. It is full of wonderful structural dissonances and makes effective use of certain techniques that are frowned upon in the traditional harmony texts…

Text

Ave, Regina Caelorum,
Ave, Domina Angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, Virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
